PORTLAND, Ore. (— Resource Innovation Institute (RII) has partnered with Management Science Associates, Inc. (MSA) to build on its longtime commitment to data security for the non-profit cultivation facility benchmarking platform, PowerScore.
PowerScore was envisioned at meetings hosted by Energy Trust of Oregon and Northwest Power & Conservation Council in 2017. The gatherings brought together RII’s initial Technical Advisory Council of leading cultivators, utilities, governments, supply chain professionals and international researchers in pursuit of common measurement and trusted environmental data associated with emerging sectors of what was then called indoor agriculture.
Today, PowerScore serves hundreds of producers with free energy and water benchmarking and reporting compliance services, and is looked to as a trusted source of aggregate analytics by governments and utilities throughout North America. The platform will be relied upon to inform benchmarks and baselines for a USDA-funded project titled, Data-driven Market Transformation for Efficient, Sustainable Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA).
“Producers across a range of crops care about confidentiality of operational data, and they also recognize that building a trusted set of aggregate environmental performance data, standardized against vetted key performance indicators, will advance business and industry interests. We are thrilled to partner with MSA to bring the highest level of data security to CEA markets,” said Derek Smith, Executive Director of Resource Innovation Institute.
MSA is a global leader in data security, informatics and analytics, with expertise in HIPAA compliance and benchmarking in several industry verticals for commercial, governmental and association customers, including the health care, consumer packaged goods, metals & advanced manufacturing, gaming and media, as well as municipal, state and federal government sectors.
“MSA is delighted to put its 58 years of expertise, products and services and reputation as a trusted third-party infomediary to work supporting RII in this exciting initiative,” said Patrick Gallagher, VP of MSA’s Metals & Advanced Manufacturing Division. “We understand the power of these types of benchmarking services, the analytics and informatics systems required to deliver them, and the critical importance of the confidentiality and security procedures and practices to protect the sensitivities and interests of the participants, as well as the system itself.”

Resource Innovation Institute is a non-profit organization committed to cultivating a better future for all of humanity. Our consortium of members brings perspectives from across the field—uniting architects and engineers, growers and operators, researchers and analysts. Together, we lead the measurement, adoption and celebration of the world’s most efficient agricultural ideas. Founded in 2016 to advise governments, utilities and industry leaders on the resource impacts of cannabis cultivation, an under studied and resource-intensive market, we have since extended our research to other sectors in partnership with the US Department of Agriculture. To take on the challenges of our changing world, we believe that food, medicine and other vital crops demand data-driven insights, securely shared with integrity.
